Regular pet vaccinations are an important part of keeping your dog healthy and helping them avoid serious diseases. Even so, it can be hard to know when to vaccinate your dog based on the recommended pet vaccinations schedule. At Plaza Veterinary Hospital, we can help with this, but we want to give you a quick overview of the vaccinations your dog will need throughout their life.

Pet Vaccinations: How Often Should You Vaccinate Your Dog?

Vaccinations for Puppies

During the first 6-8 weeks of a puppy’s life, they will need their first round of vaccinations, which includes distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. Their second round of vaccinations happens at 10-12 weeks, when they get distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and Bordetella. The last set of vaccinations happens at 14-16 weeks and includes the rabies vaccine.

Vaccinations for Adult Dogs

During the course of your dog’s life, they will usually need the distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus vaccines every three years. These are the core vaccines that your dog should get. Some of the non-core vaccines that can still benefit your dog include the vaccines for Bordetella, Lyme disease, and leptospirosis. If you have an older adult dog, we may suggest revaccination based on your dog’s health and exposure risks.

The next time you bring your dog into the vet, consult with us about the pet vaccinations they need. We are happy to provide advice and guidance about your dog’s vaccination schedule, in addition to administering any vaccines they may need at that time.
